Costs associated with Dementia to top 1% of GDP

The number of people with Dementia is expected to double by 2030 and triple by 2050 Today, on World Alzheimer’s Day, it has been reported that the costs associated with dementia will amount to more than 1% of the world’s gross domestic product this year, totalling to £388 billion.

The authors of this report have said that dementia poses the most significant health and social crisis of the century as its global financial burden continues to escalate. Worrying statistics have shown that the number of people with dementia is expected to double by 2030 and triple by 2050. Experts believe that the cost of caring for people with dementia is set to rise on a faster scale than it has previously, particularly in the developing world.

This report has come hot on the heels of recent research which has suggested that a daily supplement of vitamin B may have beneficial effects on memory loss, as it may be able to reduce brain shrinkage which is associated with age-related memory problems such as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, by up to 500%. As there have not been any previous successful drug trials about helping to slow down memory loss and dementia, this research has been seen as a breakthrough. Therefore, a daily supplement of brain-healthy nutrients such as B Vitamins should perhaps be on everyone’s list, as even just mild memory lapses is something that could affect anybody, whatever age.
