Professor George Lewith, head of health research at the University of Southampton, believes that St John’s Wort really does help people suffering with depression and happily recommends it to his patients. Professor Lewith has worked within the complementary medicine field for many years and has found many studies that show St John’s Wort is effective in people with depression.
Professor Lewith also dismisses recent findings from other studies and reports that have tried to suggest that St Johns Wort does not help with depressive symptoms. After all, these are only a couple of studies which suggest this, and there are many more well-designed studies that show the complete opposite. There have been many studies that have shown time and again that St John’s Wort is just as effective in helping to treat mild to moderate depression as many conventional anti-depressants. Mild to moderate depression can be debilitating and life-changing in a negative way, so good treatment is essential.
Professor Lewith suggests that St John’s Wort is much kinder to patients, as many patients see fast results with fewer side effects and fewer withdrawal symptoms. Unfortunately, conventional anti-depressants can cause nausea, weight gain, insomnia and sexual dysfunction, and when people stop taking them they often struggle with headaches and cravings.
