- Sleep – age affects our circadian rhythm which causes us to spend less time in deep sleep. This is thought to be because our melatonin levels decrease with age. Melatonin is the hormone that helps to induce sleep at night. Deep sleep is required for the body to restore energy levels.
- Activity levels – it is important to keep active as we age. Muscle mass declines steadily with age. As muscles shrink, they become fatigued more easily. Strength training exercises can help to reduce the rate at which muscle mass is lost. A morning exercise routine will also help to keep energy levels higher throughout the course of the day.
- Stress – long-term stress can seriously deplete the body’s energy stores. It causes changes to chemicals present in the brain that affect learning, memory and energy levels. This can make it harder to concentrate and recall information. Keep the brain active with crosswords and puzzles.
