Q: What is the best before date on these? Are they safe after this date?

All of our products have at least a year's expiry date but tend to have 2-3. Although most supplements may not be dangerous after the indicated expiry date, they will lose potency and side effects may occur. We would always advise to use the supplements before the end of the month indicated on the packaging and if you would like to use them after this date then it would be at your own risk.

Q: For months now I seem to be awaking at 2am-3am and can not fall back to sleep! I am awake for hours. I have been recommended to try Milk Thistle as it may be my liver! Would I be able to try some on a free trial?

Unfortunately we do not have any trial samples of this product. In addition, as we are not medically qualified we would recommend seeking advice from your GP or pharmacist if you have concerns relating to any existing medical conditions.

Q: Hi,I have just purchased boots own Milk Thistle which states 108mg of silymarin.
If yours is only 54mg per tablet does that mean I should take two daily.

Yours is still better value. I just need to know the answer to this question before I purchase from you.
A: We advise to take either one or two tablets of our Milk Thistle supplement per day. Whether you take one tablet or two, is down to your own discretion, as long as you do not exceed two tablets daily.

Q: Are they good for high cholesterol and blood pressure.
A: Although Milk Thistle is predominantly used as a natural treatment for liver problems, there are some studies that suggest that it can help with lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. However, there are more studies and evidence that suggest that other supplements may be more helpful for this; such as Garlic for lowering blood pressure, and Plant Sterols for lowering cholesterol.

Q: Hi,I am currently taking 2 x 500 mg Milk Thisle capsules a day, would taking 1 x 3000mg tablet be too much or would it not make a difference, also does it matter if its i take capsules or tablets.
A: It is often difficult to compare supplements from other companies. Our 3000mg refers to the whole herb. When comparing to other companies, it is best to look for the active ingredient. The active ingredient in Milk Thistle is silymarin. Our 3000mg Milk Thistle contains 86mg of silymarin. You would have to compare the silymarin content in your current Milk Thistle to see if you would be taking a similar amount. It also should not matter whether it is taken in capsule or tablet form, as long as you do not exceed any recommended dosages on the labels.

Q: I've posted this question recently but have still not received an answer.
You mentioned that Simply Supplements Milk Thistle is "super strength"
The standardised amount of Silymarin in a tablet should be 80%.
What percentage is 54mg Silymarin in one of your tablets. Would appreciate it if you would answer this question .
A: The silymarin content in our Milk Thistle is 90% per tablet.

Q: My son has been told that his liver makes too much iron, would milk thistle help his problem?.
A: There are studies that show that Milk Thistle can benefit people suffering with their liver producing too much iron, so this particular supplement may help. Other helpful ideas include reducing consumption of red meat, reducing the amount of Vitamin C intake as this can increase the absorption of iron. Consuming tea and dairy products with a meal can help to reduce the amount of iron absorbed as well. However, please be aware that we are not medically trained, therefore we strongly suggest that you consult with a doctor or pharmacist prior to taking any supplements for this condition.

Q: What's the % of Silymarin in each of your 54mg tablet?
The standardised amount of Silymarin one should take per tablet should be 80%.
A: The silymarin content in our Milk Thistle is 90% per tablet.

Q: would milk thistle help an already diseased liver

Q: I would like to start taking milk thistle but am worried it might cause problems with gal stones is this likely to happen?
A: Several studies have shown that Milk thistle is particularly useful in stimulating the gallbladder, promoting the flow of bile. It contains bitter substance silymarin that stimulate bile production. However, we recommend that you speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking this herb supplement especially if you are on prescribed medication.

Q: I have just purchased Milk Thistle tablets, as I read the are good if you have Gilbert's Syndrome. However I have found they give me a very nasty taste in the mouth which lasts for 24 hours. any ideas?
A: We are unaware of this type of symptom or reaction when taking Milk Thistle. However, research has it that some medications or supplements can leave a metallic taste which can be unpleasant but a common issue. If this symptom persists, we advice that you consult your GP or pharmacist to ensure that you are not allergic to Milk Thistle.

Q: Can you take these milk thistle tablets to help improve a fatty liver?
A: Several scientific studies suggest that substances in milk thistle (especially a flavonoid called silymarin) protect the liver from toxins. Silymarin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and it may help the liver repair itself by growing new cells. Therefore taking milk thistle may help reverse fatty liver. We also recommend eating less carbohydrate and more vegetables and drink less alcohol.

Q: Hi - How long does this product take to improve your liver function and if a liver function test has to be taken asap -would an improvement show that my liver function has improved?

As everyone is different, and supplements are not prescription medications, some people will notice benefits sooner than others. We cannot advise specifically how long it would take for you to notice a difference; however we generally advise anything up to 6 weeks for supplements to take effect.

Q: My current Milk thistle tablets are 200mg Silmarin but the price is now prohibitive. 54mg seems very low . Is this adequate or is it possible to take 2 tablets to bring the level up to that provided by most companies.

The Milk Thistle Herb Extract is 60mg, and of this 54mg is Silymarin. We would not advise that you consume more than the recommended 1 tablet per day.

Q: Is this product suitable for vegetarians.?

Yes, this product is suitable for vegetarians.

Q: I have a 13 year old springer Spaniel who is very fit apart from the fact that he is drinking more water than he should.Blood tests show that there is a problem with his liver and the vet has suggested that I should try milk thistle but they are unable to suggest the dosage perhaps you could help.

Milk thistle supplements list the appropriate human dose on the label. An easy way to convert the dosage for your dog is to take your dog's weight, consider it a percent, and multiply the recommended dosage by that percent. For example, if your dog weighs 20 pounds then you would give your dog 20 percent of the recommended human dosage. Our recommended daily dose for human consumption is equivalent to 54mg of Silymarin. Dogs that are very ill with liver disease may take a higher dosage. Please consult your veterinarian.

Q: What time of day is best to take milk thistle? I have heard it works best at night?

You can take these Milk Thistle tablets either in the morning or evening with a meal, and it is recommended that you try to take them at the same time every day.

If you are taking any prescription medication, you have a medical condition or you have specific concerns about the suitability of any of our products in relation to these, you should always consult your GP or Pharmacist prior to taking supplements.

  • 8th May 2011 - Gary Glazebrook
Q: Can you please confirm this is just 54mg of Silymarin per 3000mg tablet? This would make these tablets roughly 1.8% Silymarin compared to the standard 80%. This seems extremely low??

Yes, each tablet contains  Milk Thistle Herb Extract 60mg (50:1) equivalent to 3000mg (54mg Silymarin).

  • 7th September 2010 - gary lowe
