The benefits of Iron Supplements

Iron is an essential mineral required to produce healthy haemoglobin - the protein within red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. As a result, iron supports the transportation of oxygen and nutrients to cells around the body. Iron also plays a vital role in the production of ATP, which provides the body with energy and, for this reason many people find that iron tablets can help to boost energy levels. Low levels of iron can reduce the bodys production of antibodies and weaken the immune system, and may lead to anaemia or feelings of tiredness and fatigue.

Who needs iron?

Findings from a recent survey suggest that nearly ninety percent of women of child-bearing age in the UK do not receive the recommended 14.8mg of iron on a daily basis. This may, in part, be due to the fact that many women eat few iron rich foods. Iron is lost through menstruation so it is important for women of child-bearing age to ensure they consume adequate levels. Certain digestive disorders can also cause deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals, and iron supplements can help to ensure that the advised daily levels are met.

I have had to start taking iron supplements in my third trimester of pregnancy. eating green leafy veg, eggs, lean meat etc isn't enough (for example, approx 100g of green veg only provides a very small amount of iron - 1.4mg to be exact. two portions of lean meat is still only 4mg of iron.) women need 14mg per day. these supplements ensure i am getting the correct amount - easily.

We Eat our Greens but need a Bit More
    Graham Townsend-Parker, Stoke on Trent
My wife and I eat a lot of green vegtables which contain high amounts of Iron but my wife wants us to have just a bit more each day. The order took time to come through as you were having difficulties at the time but managed to get them to us as quick as you could so thank you for your efforts.  The iron is easy to take because of it's size and is doing us both the world of good. We are going to put another order in very soon.

I have Vit C from you but don't feel it does enough for my immune system as I kept getting colds and especially at this time of year so have been taking Iron alongside it and I get less colds now. It has given my immune system that extra boost I needed and feel 100% better for it. I hope you don't get rid of it, I will be upset if you do.

    Owen Cooper, Peterborough
Nice to see you doing iron on its own now, normally I had to buy your A-Z Multivitamins just to get the iron I needed but now it is a lot easier to have it on it's own. I'm sure i'm not the only customer to have asked about iron on it's own and at 4 for a four month supply is a bargain. A large amount of customers will be very pleased just like me.

Should iron tablets be take with food?

For optimum absorption, iron should not be taken with food. This is because certain foods and drinks (such as dairy and caffeine) can interfere with the body's absorption of iron. Instead, try taking iron tablets with a glass of water at least one hour before a meal.

  • 14th January 2013 - Andrea
Q: The Iron 14mg is ferrous fumarate. The question is: isnt too low the 14mg? The normal is 200mg. For one person with iron deficiency, how many tablets should take?

The current recommended daily allowance (RDA) for healthy adults is 14mg. However, if you have been diagnosed with an iron deficiency then the recommended amount could be significantly higher. Your GP should be able to recommend a suitable dosage based on the severity of your deficiency.

  • 14th November 2012 - Jennifer Smith
