Iron is an essential mineral required to produce healthy haemoglobin - the protein within red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. As a result, iron supports the transportation of oxygen and nutrients to cells around the body. Iron also plays a vital role in the production of ATP, which provides the body with energy and, for this reason many people find that iron tablets can help to boost energy levels. Low levels of iron can reduce the body’s production of antibodies and weaken the immune system, and may lead to anaemia or feelings of tiredness and fatigue.
Findings from a recent survey suggest that nearly ninety percent of women of child-bearing age in the UK do not receive the recommended 14.8mg of iron on a daily basis. This may, in part, be due to the fact that many women eat few iron rich foods. Iron is lost through menstruation so it is important for women of child-bearing age to ensure they consume adequate levels. Certain digestive disorders can also cause deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals, and iron supplements can help to ensure that the advised daily levels are met.

Should iron tablets be take with food?
For optimum absorption, iron should not be taken with food. This is because certain foods and drinks (such as dairy and caffeine) can interfere with the body's absorption of iron. Instead, try taking iron tablets with a glass of water at least one hour before a meal.
