Understanding Cholesterol

It is estimated that two out of three adults in the UK have raised cholesterol and heart disease remains one of the country’s biggest health concerns. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) carry cholesterol from the liver to cells around the body. However, if our dietary supply of LDL cholesterol outweighs the body’s demand, excess cholesterol is deposited along artery walls, which is why LDL cholesterol is often referred to as ‘bad’ cholesterol. An effective means of lowering the risk of heart disease is to reduce the level of harmful LDL cholesterol in the blood.

The benefits of Plant Sterols

The European Commission has approved the use of plant sterols supplements as a proven and safe means of reducing total cholesterol. Plant sterols have a similar structure to our own cholesterol, which means that they block the body’s absorption of cholesterol into the blood. Studies show that daily supplementation with 2400mg of plant sterols (3 tablets) reduces cholesterol levels by 12.5% in 2 to 3 weeks. Plus, plant sterols have been shown to have no detrimental effect on HDL (good) cholesterol levels.

Why choose Simply Supplements?

Lowering cholesterol levels has been shown to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, without the side effects or price tags of statin drugs. Our Plant Sterols Supplements 800mg contain powerful levels of beta-sitosterol and have been carefully developed based on the strengths used in successful clinical trials. This premium-quality supplement is manufactured in the UK to strict EU standards that ensure the highest levels of quality are always maintained.

Q: I've just started taking 3 tablets daily of your Plant Sterols 800mg as a recent test showed my cholesterol as 6.5. However, I seem to have developed an itch all over my body, is this normal and is it safe to continue?

We would recommend that you stop taking the tablets and speak to your GP about the possible cause of your rash. There are no known side effects to using the Plant Sterols.

Q: Started taking the tablets today and finding them hard to swallow. Can they be chewed instead?
A: If you are having trouble swallowing these tablets then you can try cutting them up or crushing them. Although we would not recommend to chew these, if you would prefer to take them this way, then they will not be any less effective than swallowing them, and it is down to your own discretion how you would prefer to take them.

A: Some herbal supplements may interact with prescribed drugs. We advice that you consult with a GP or pharmacist before combining herbs with drugs.
  • 10th July 2014 - Julie Gee
Q: Can you confirm whether I should take these tablets all at the same time or spread them out throughout the day ie dosage 1-4 all at once or take a couple in the morning afternoon and then at night (up to 4)
A: Where you have to take two or more capsules or tablets of the same preparation, it is a good idea to spread these out over the day in order to maximize absorption and cause less fluctuation in blood levels. We suggest taking two after your breakfast meal and another two after your evening meal. If you wish to take 3 then take one after breakfast then two after evening meal.

Q: I am diabetic and my cholesterol reading is fairly high. I have tried taking 2 different types of statin on the advice of my Diabetic Nurse but both have had dreadful side effects when combined with Tramadol and/or Pregabalin. Are you of the opinion that Plant sterols would be effective? I have a Diabetic Review in 7 days and would find your opinion useful. Thank you.

We do strongly recommend Plant Sterols for helping to lower cholesterol levels; therefore we would certainly advise taking this product if you are attempting to get your cholesterol levels down.  However, as we are not medically trained, we would suggest consulting your GP.

Q: I take a statin each day and I am very interested in your plant sterols. The question is would I take a statin and plant sterol together or at different times of the day?.

We advise to take 1-4 a day of the Plant Sterols. As we are not medically trained, we would advise that you consult your GP in regards to how many statins to take alongside this product.

  • 30th September 2012 - lynne comer
Q: can plant sterol be taken alongside statins

Statins work in a different way from sterols. Statins inhibit an enzyme in the liver, so less cholesterol is made and released into your circulation. Because they work in a different way from statins, plant sterols can be combined with statin therapy to lower cholesterol levels even further. Please know that we are not medically trained. Before taking any herbal supplements with prescribed medications, please consult your GP or local pharmacist.

Q: I have difficulty swollowing tablets/ capsules and wondered how large these Plant Sterols 800 where. Thank you Susan

Our Plant Sterols 800mg is in tablet form. Each tablet is approximately 19.5mm x 8.2mm.

  • 18th February 2012 - Margaret Talbot
Q: How do you calculate how many tablets you should take?

We recommend that you take between 1-4 tablets on a daily basis. If you have seriously high LDL or total cholesterol levels then you will benefit from taking 4 tablets per day. However, if you are simply looking to maintain healthy cholesterol levels then you may find 2 tablets to be beneficial.

  • 29th January 2012 - Paul Jenkins
