What is Lutein?

Lutein is a carotenoid that is naturally concentrated in the macular of healthy eyes. The macular is the most visually sensitive part of the eye. Unfortunately, the natural levels of lutein in the eye often decline as we age. Lutein may help to fight ‘free-radical’ particles in the body that can cause hardening of the arteries and other serious health conditions.

Age and vision

Modern lifestyles require many of us to spend long periods of time focusing on objects right in front of us, such as computer screens, books, and televisions. Over time, this can cause vision to become weaker. It is natural for vision to deteriorate with age. This usually begins to occur around the age of 40 and is believed to be due to a gradual loss of flexibility in the lens of the eyes, and in the muscles and fibres that surround them.

Why take a Lutein supplement?

It is widely believed that supplementation with lutein can increase macular pigment density in the eye, which may support the maintenance of normal eye function and promote healthy eyes. There is also increasing evidence that lutein may also play a role in preventing or slowing the appearance of macular degeneration. Simply Supplements Lutein 10mg contains highly concentrated levels of the ‘active’ beneficial ingredients, to help promote healthy vision.

Q: Is there any evidence in support of Lutein helping to alleviate raised Intraocular Pressures. Raised IOP'S
A: The research surrounding lutein is fairly new, and to date there are no long-term studies to support its efficacy in the treatment of glaucoma/raised IOP’s. However, many experts do believe that lutein can help to stabilise intraocular pressure by protecting the optic nerve from free radical oxidative damage, particularly when combined with zeaxanthin.

what is the best time to take lutein supplements?

As Lutein is lipid-soluble it should be taken with food. This simply means that the body absorbs Lutein more effectively when low levels of fat are present. Therefore, we would recommend that you take these Lutein 10mg capsules with the same meal each day.

Q: Is there no Zinc or Zeaxanthin in these tablets.? If not, could you tell me the reason when so many 'experts' recommend these?

Combining Lutein with zeaxanthin has indeed shown extra benefits, and we have formulated our SimplyBest Visualex Gold for optimum benefits. Please click HERE to view.

However, many customers still prefer to purchase Lutein alone, and so we continue to offer this alternative.

Q: I see that this product contains Magnesium. I already take your Calcium/Magnesium tablet, so would this overdose me on the Magnesium?

No, the level of magnesium in our Lutein 10mg capsules is minimal, and so will not compromise your daily intake. Providing that you do not exceed the recommended dosage for both these products, they are safe to take in combination.

Q: Could you please tell me how long can I take lutein tablets?

We do not advise any specific period for taking Lutein. They are perfectly safe to take on a long-term basis. However if you are taking prescription medication alongside these, or have any concerns, we would advise that you consult your GP.

Q: My daughter has very bad eye sight and every check up her eyes are getting worse. Would she be able to take Lutein she is 13years old.

We generally would not advise supplements for anyone under the age of 16. This is purely due to the fact that they are not prescription medicines and people will react differently to different supplements. Lutein is something that we would advise for poor eyesight; however we would advise in this instance that you consult her GP or optician beforehand.
